We all know Louie Vega as an House Music
Maestro, how long have you been in the music business?
I've been in the music business 22 years now. Since 1985.
This new compilation
for the Mix The Vibe series on King Street is awesome, how did you choose the tracks ?
I chose the tracks on King Street based on my experience with their music. I've had great years of playing King St. Music since their beginning and I was an instrumental dj in breaking their music especially at the Underground Network parties (my residency in the 90s).
Are you working on something new in studio at the moment ?
I'm working on various projects. Producing a new album for Anane (lead vocalist on the Elements Of Life Project), producing a song for Cerrone's new album,
produced a few songs on Mr. V's album, and composed a song for Cirque Du Soleil for the Superbowl XLI. Myself, along with Anane on lead and the Elements Of Life will perform on Sunday Feb. 4, alongside the Cirque Du Soleil spectacular show.
As Masters At Work we will be doin the first Strictly Rhythm Release after many years in hiatus. Strictly Maw is the name of the album to be released this summer. "Lust", compiled by Louie Vega will be released this spring on
Concept Records (UK). A Remix of "Mi Gente" by the infamous Hector LaVoe for V2 / Fania Records.
Now in the studio producing Elements Of Life 2 "One Dream". Also signed my first Movie Soundtrack "Spit" Directed by Rotimi Rainwater coming this summer. (LnM Records, a new label I started with Michael Weiss of Nervous Records).
What are your musical influences ?
My musical influences are many from my wife and son to Quincy Jones, Stevie Wonder, Steely Dan, Tito Puente, Hector LaVoe, Willie Colon, War (the band), Mizell Brothers, Chaka Khan, Larry Levan, Prince and many more.
Who are now, for you, the most interesting artists/producers of the moment ?
Nate Morgan, Anane, Medasi, Rebirth, Raul Midon, Mr. V, Timbaland, Ame, Martinez Brothers, and more.
You are one of the most respected producer of the house music scene today, where does house music go from your point of view ?
House music needs to spread beyond the small community, the rest of the world needs to hear it and we all need to stay creative and keep collaborating and experimenting. Getting the younger generation into it. Way of presentation is important. The new project EOL is doing with Cirque Du Soleil is a way we are expanding our audiences. We've also crossed over to doing jazz, world, latin, rock as well as electronic festivals. The live aspect of house music is important. clubs will always be there, people always want to go out and have a good time. Staying with the Roots but expanding our horizons.
What are the big tunes in your box at the moment ?
"Love Remains The Same" Luis Quintero Feat. Blaze
"Put Your Drink Down" Mr. V
"Shake Dat Booty" Anane - Cerrone / Louie Vega Rough Mix
"One Dream" Louie Vega & The elements of life Feat. Anane
What music do you listen at home or in your car ?
Jazz, world, latin music.
Vinyl or digital ? And why ?
I prefer the sound of vinyl because there is nothing like that analog warm sound. But it makes it easier to travel with cds and Serrato, you can bring lots more music and its more convenient for the job we do. Digital is the future and as you can see has already taken over. Purists like me will always love vinyl but have changed with the times on the digital aspect.
Thank
you very much for this interview Mr. Vega
