LULA needs no introduction to the world of the underground, she entered the speaker a decade ago and served up the vocals for the chart-topping underground classic, "Goosebumps" and never left the woofer. When we first heard Danny Tenaglia drop the Johnny Vicious' Mushroom Mix with LULA’s vocals dancing into the mix from the Twilo's JBL Towers, we have been hooked on LULA. Pumping out hit after hit with the biggest names in the industry such as Danny Tenaglia, Vibe Rui de Silvia, Johnny Vicious, Creamer and K, Peter Rauhofer, her legacy continues. LULA's own brand of Freestyling poetry, is pumped out at peak-time in dance clubs and disco techs around the world. Entering the game on top, LULA still enjoys riding those
frequencies. Since the advent of Myspace, LULA is now bigger than ever. With a heart the size of a Bertha speaker, LULA can be seen posted everywhere and agreeing to do records with total strangers and unknown producers. As long as she is inspired by what she hears, LULA is game for throwing her heart and soul into the mix without a care in the world for the logistics of the business side. (The boring details says LULA!) "The love is in the process and the reward is being a part of the making of the music," says LULA. This year LULA has connected with many superstar talents all whom want nothing more than to hear LULA's quirky vocals atop of their beats and with whom she is planning an ALL STARS Album. With all the magnetic activity unleashed by networking Myspace it should be no surprise that LULA and her affiliated label, KULT Records, are already sitting on top of 15 new & unreleased tracks with incredibly sassy vocals by LULA! With enough tracks for 2 consecutive albums, all of which bring to light the many and yet unexplored talents of this very unlikely diva, LULA keeps intriguing us with her poetry and her unique delivery which blends so amazingly with full force mechanical beats. Most of all, LULA makes us rejoice because of her deep love and passion for the underground music scene and all its
players. As LULA smiles, looking at the reaction sheets of her current release entitled "FIRE & BURN", send by superstars Djs and LULA’s supporters including DJ Vibe, Victor Calderone, Peiter Bailey, DJ Boris, Chus, Merritt, DJ Paulo, Stephan Grondin amongst many others (with mixes by Portugal's DJ Jiggy, New York's Tibal Tarante, Italy's Giangi Cappai). LULA takes a break to talk to us and let us know just what else she has up her speaker.. Now that Fire & Burn is out and charting with major support from all the big players, we hear that your LULA vs ALAN T "There Is Only One",
is receiving great reviews from all the big superstars and adding fuel to the
Fire! Tell us about this new single you did with Alan T.
Since I have been on Myspace, many people asked me if I would ever make a track together with Alan T. and I replied, "Sure, why not?" So one day, Lilla from KULT Records, whom I signed with exclusively, asked me the same question and again I said, "Sure, why not?". So Lilla from KULT sent me some vocals. As I listened and couldnt believe what I heard!!!!!!! I wrote some of my stuff to what what was sent. It wasn't hard to write, because if somebody is trying to take over my speaker, trust me I HAVE A LOT TO SAY...TO SCREAM, ACTUALLY. I knew this was going to be a funny track. With Alan T. it has to be, right? After recording my vocals, next thing I knew, Danny Tenaglia was playing it 5 times in one night. Danny even announced something over the mic of how much he loves that track. That's what I heard at least. I
wasn't there.
I heard you and Alan did a photo session and video shoot in NY when u were there in August. How was it to battle for the speaker in person with Alan T.?
He was hard to fight, but it was worth it. HE IS SO WILD! GOD, IS HE WILD AND LOUD!!!!!! It was crazy and fun. I was scratching him and kicking and screaming. Everything. And he didn't fall for my sweet, lovely LULANESS at all. (hahahaha) Sweet and lovely. Me, yeah, right. (hahaha) Actually I heard he was scared of me. I was too blond. (hahaha) You will hear who won this nasty cat fight when you listen to the track.
Did Alan T. hit you in the head with the Megaphone?
No, he didn't hit me with the megaphone. He and his megaphone. As if he wasn't loud enough without it already. (hahahaha) I would have hit him over the head with my golden high heels, anyway. (Although, during the video shoot, the megaphone did fly out of ALAN T hands while he was passing it from hand to hand and all most hit the camera point blank! It was the megaphone P Ditty gave him off his boat! LOL)
How is the remix package? Can you let us know who is going to remix this incredibly fun track LULA vs ALAN T "There Is Only One"?
Ohhhhhhhhhhh God. What a line up. I'm speechless just thinking about these guys we got. I can't wait to hear all the mixes. This package will be insaaaaaaaaaaane!!!!! Eddie Cumana of DYNAMIX, who the produce the original mix of "There's Only One", is working on his remix. Some of my all-time heroes such as Rui da silva, Kult of Krameria, Ralph Falcon, Behrouz, Alex Cohen (he made one of my favorite remixes of this year called "superflyin´" so I choose him to remix this track!) have all agreed to do mixes!
When you were in NYC for two weeks, in August, visiting from your hometown of Vienna, Austria, you had photo-shoots, video-shoots, and your radio interviews as far as Canadian FM Radio Shows and were the guest of honor at many great superstars party. Can you tell us how that made you feel and do you miss living in NYC?
It made me feel really good. So alive again and happy. I've been gone from NYC for so many years. When I left NYC to my hometown of Vienna, where I've been taking care of my son, my dogs, my organic vegetable garden and stuff like that. After all the boring housewife and mother years, I came back to New York City, the music and KULT Records were just waiting for me. I felt like I was given a new life, or my old life back. Even better than the old one, actually, I never had a label who has taken such good care of me. A label who treated me so well, like family and at the same time like a superstar. Everybody I met, new friends or old friends, were so appreciative, supportive and nice. I was in heaven. Everybody made me feel really special. I got my LULA confidence back. I lost it during the "mami" years...I would have never thought that people still remember me and want me back in the music scene. What a life! I love it! Yes, I really want to move back to New York City and I will, when the time is right.
What has been the best party you attended while in NYC? Please comment on the NYC
nightlife!
I loved Victor Calderone at Pacha. what great music. Also, Behrouz at Cielo. I loved his music. But what ever happened to the clubs?????? I was shocked. Imagine, the last time I went out in NYC was at vinyl when Danny Tenaglia was spinning, that was 1999!!! Oh god, where have these times gone? Where have the clubs gone? PLEASE CAN SOMEONE OPEN A CLUB LIKE THIS AGAIN? I will work there for free! First of all, we need a good sound system with big black speakers that stand on the ground and darkness. PLEASE!!! That's all we really need. WHAT HAPPENED??? I was shocked. The music was so good, but what happened to the underground feeling. I want it back. I NEED IT BACK! And many of the people I know want it back. Lets do it! Lets all do it together! We need the underground back. We have all the good music. We need a good club again. Sorry, I got carried away.... hahaha We hear you have a lot of productions in the works, so much that you have decided to make two albums to be dropped 8 months apart? You basically have a pre album, album! Is that correct?
Hahaha, yeah a "pre-album". It's true. this pre-album will be "The Underground Portuguese Sound And Me". Strictly the Portuguese sound that I love so much. Too many great Portuguese producers. Too much good music. If I would only release 2 singles a year, I would be 120 years old when I finish working with all of them and the great producer from the rest of the world. Tell us about how this pre-album "The Underground Portuguese Sound And Me" album come about?
So many Portuguese producers contacted me over the last year. They still love me for "Goosebumps," even after 12 years. I wanted to make music with them, and I did. At one point I had a couple of very good and finished tracks from some of these guys. Rather unknown producers some of them, others were newcomers. There was no way to release these tracks on the next album altogether with the already big and famous producers. It could have been the case that these great tracks wouldn't have been released at all, or maybe in 2 years or so. I didn't want to wait. I couldn't. The purpose of this album is to get the tracks out who couldn't have a chance on the other album. That's why not all the famous producers from Portugal will be on this album. They can be on the next album. The one with the big names. How did you decide to give an antipasto Album of Portuguese flava only? Is it true that you have been flying to Portugal just to attend key parties? Can you talk about loving the DJ and the music.
I wanted to do an only Portuguese album for a long time. I love this music so much. I always have. I don't know what it is with these guys. since "The Underground Sounds of Lisbon" with "So Get Up" at Sound Factory. Since Danny Tenaglia played many of the Portuguese tracks from USL, The Kult of Krameria, DJ Jiggy, etc. at Twilo. I was the BIGGEST fan of this sound. "It's the Portuguese sound, hahaha." I believe it's the Atlantic Ocean and the weather....the music is raw, wild, energetic, deep, hard, warm, underground, creative, cool and so sweet, it is intense, passionate, and sexy. Just like the guys who produce it. How can I love this music and these guys so much? It's insane. I'm addicted. And I knew all that from when I met vibe and Rui da Silva back then when we made Goosebumps. I knew I would feel at home in Portugal with these people. And now I have really found this out. Yes, I have been going there to meet some of my favourite producers and to hear good music. I love it. As I expected. I knew it. The country and its people welcome me like a long-lost family member who is coming home. My soul feels at home when I´m with my Portuguese friends. What can be expected on this first album of the 2 LULA albums in the works? (Second being the ALL STARS one)
Great music. This what you can expect for sure. Some "secret weapons". 150% LULAness. underground. deep stuff, variety. music from total newcomers, some rather unknown producers and some who are very famous already. in their country and/or all over the world.
I told theses guys, I want this project to be like "our baby". We are all in this together. We don't do that for a label, not for sales or for charts. I wanted us to make this album for the music, for the best underground music they can make. I wanted everybody's soul and heart in it. 150%. This album is all I ever wanted to make. If it was the last album in my life to make. I could easily lean back, rest, be happy and be satisfied for the rest of my life. I'm into it with all my heart and soul. And I think all the guys feel the same way. I believe so, and I hope you can hear it. So after you drop this album sometimes in early 2008 the second international ALL STARS album in the works will be finished...correct? Do you know who will be in this "The KULT of LULA" album? Can you tell us about those additionally planned collaborators?
Hoo YESSSS! One with the BIG names. Wow, I'm gonna faint when I'm writing some of the names who will be on this 2nd album with me. It's really unbelievable to even imagine that. Okay, here we go. I have to sit down. So far these producers have agreed to do tracks with me: DJ Pierre, DJ Vibe, Rui da Silva, The Kult of Krameria (the Portuguese sound again!!!) Victor Calderone, DJ Chus, Saeed, Behrouz, Johnny Vicious, hopefully Danny Tenaglia,...........and I would really like Felix da Housecat, The Murk Boys and Steve Lawler to be on that too. Lets see.....I will also have a collaboration with Franklin Fuentes. Unbelievable again. I remember listening to his tracks at the Sound Factory Bar. I would have NEVER thought to make a track with him one day. It's so crazy. I love this
guy. Can we hope for a LULA reunion with Danny Tenaglia for the KULT of LULA Album?
I really hope Danny finds the time to make a track or an edit for me for this album. I already talked to him and he is very busy but may try to make an edit. But I really need his soul on this album. What's a LULA album without Danny? Its not right? I need him on that. He made me to LULA. It wouldn't be right. I would be really sad not to have him. I have everybody else who was a part of "Goosebumps". That's where it all began for me. Vibe, Rui, Johnny.....only Danny would be missing.....that can not be! Please find some time, Danny. Please!!! I'm on my knees, really! I hope he reads that. I will forward it to him .... hahahaha.
